Ask Ron By: Ron Pramschufer

ASK RON: “How in the world do I know what a good price range is when considering publishing options for my book? So far the cost has been between $550-$2000.”

This is probably the most common question I’m asked by new authors wanting to self-publish. How much? The answer to this lies somewhere between “How much is a car?” and “How much is your $14.95 muffler?” Unfortunately, the overwhelming majority of what you are going to find on the Internet falls into the later. Before […]   Full Story

Three Daytona 500 Publishing Lessons

Despite the fact that I’m a bit of a car geek, I wouldn’t call myself a race fan. But this year’s Daytona 500 was really something to watch—if you could manage to keep track of when it was being run and broadcast. It brought to mind the unpredictable nature of life and all things we attempt to organize. Three major publishing lessons emerged during “Race Week’s” events.   Full Story

Two Design Nuggets

Dan Poynter During my publishing programs, I’m often approached by members of the audience who tell me that they would like to work on their audio product first and delay the publication of their book. My reply is always the same. The printed book must come first. Go for the credibility first and then go for the money.   Full Story

9 Truths About EBooks

Emma Wright I fell into digital publishing after doing freelance work for various online business start-ups based in East London. At the time, I was looking for a full-time job and not thinking so much about career progression, but it occurs to me now that my background with the online businesses left me peculiarly suited to working with ebooks.   Full Story

Editing By: Carolyn Madison

“I Hate My Editor!”

Do you writers seriously think your editor doesn’t know how you really feel about him or her? Oh sure, most of you are polite enough when interacting directly with editors. But I’m not delusional. I know what you’re really thinking when it’s you and your heavily marked-up manuscript that you’ve just received. Many writers who have had their work edited have thought, muttered, or yelled, “I hate my editor!”—or a similar sentiment not fit to include here.   Full Story

Marketing By: LaMont Wright

The Corporate Kiss

LaMont Wright Again I stand on the verge of a familiar milestone with an unfamiliar wisdom. Feverishly I type away the midnight oil with the sounds of tapping on laptop keys. “The End” will bless the final page of my second novel and I cannot help but to dwell on the journey before this one. I cannot help but to think about the insightful dialogue I’ve had with www.selfpublishing.com a year earlier. I cannot help but dwell on what I could possibly do better this year. Since my first novel, I’ve paid a lot of attention to the psyche of the consumer. I discovered quickly that in the business of selling books, music or anything else, there is a common thread that makes a product hot enough to fly off of the shelves. It is the illusion of success, and it is the appearance of stability, consistency and quality.   Full Story

General By: Peggy Eldridge-Love

The Cyber Writing Village

Peggy Eldridge-Love Not many years ago, being a writer was a particularly lonely, often misunderstood and under-appreciated mission in life. For many it was merely an aside, something that, out of necessity, was squeezed in whenever, wherever, and however it could be. Private little dreams of publication or one day writing bestsellers were frequently dismissed by well-meaning friends and loved ones who didn’t want you to continue to waste your valuable time on foolishness, and it seemed their bone curdling messages were all too often supported and reinforced by the secret stash of rejection letters you might have kept hidden in the back of your sock drawer.   Full Story

"Excellent, interesting and informative article!"

"Enjoyed your article. I have written two religious fiction books. Do you have any advice on organizations I could contact to offer these books to women in prison envionments? I have spoken to a group of inmates in a women's prison and was overwhelmed with the response. I would be willing to offer books at my cost if I could find some agency to help. do you have any suggestions? I probably should not be asking you this question, but for some reason, I felt that I should. I pray you have a blessed day."

"I think there's another big change going on that no one is talking about yet. A voracious book reader as well as a writer, I got a Kindle about 1.5 years ago. And for about 6 months, I have had a subscription to a daily Kindle newsletter summarizing some of the best free books of the day. While authors are making them free for a day or two to popularize them, I have found an average of one free book a day that I am very interested in, so the money I am spending on books has been going down rapidly. I'm sure that Amazon has data about that trend but doesn't want to publish it."

"Congratulations Ron, for your clear and detailed explanation of what could be a complex problem if not handled with diplomacy and an open mind. Having been production manager for several New York and Dallas advertising agencies and magazines I have lived through this problem many times. Almost always, using your "Golden Rule" all parties were able go come away feeling satisfied from the experience. The "Golden Rule" does work and isn't that the best reason why it's still around after all these centuries? By the way, this is a good time to thank you again for the professional result and the way the your company handled the recent printing of my bilingual book on grieving: "Daniel's Journey". Thanks, Paul Feldman"
