Jonathan Gullery

About Jonathan Gullery

My name is Jonathan Gullery and I was born and raised in New Zealand, and received my background in graphics from an apprenticeship in the newspaper industry there.

I arrived in New York in the early 80s and continued a career in design with a Mac Plus (and no hard drive!). Since that time I’ve worked mostly free-lance until teaming up with RJ Communications to create Budget Book Design in 2002. Budget Book Design has evolved into the design department of SelfPublishing.com and since then I’ve designed nearly 1,000 books, everything from relatively simple novels to lavish presentation volumes including cookbooks, poetry, family histories, children’s picture books and coffee table art books.

Although I use state-of-the-art equipment I still believe that providing old-fashioned customer service is the best way to successfully compete in our digital world. Feel free to contact me at Jonathan@selfpublishing.com.

Some defy all the rules – so the following … [Read more...]

I realized that what seems to me to be clear choices in the cover design packages that we offer here at www.SelfPublishing.com, may not be so clear to new customers. Following is an explanation of … [Read more...]

WORD VS. INDESIGN and other common first-time questions from our design customers

Q: I spoke a few weeks ago about laying out my MSWord file into 5.5×8.5 book format. I would like to get some clarification on a few things: Other publishers or printers are telling me that typesetting is needed because a number of glitches could occur with the file conversion from my Word file to whatever you use to work in.  True or … [Read more...]

Here at Selfpublishing.com we receive files every day – some are formatted wonderfully, and some leave a little to be desired. Some defy all the rules – so the following outline of do’s and don’ts should help many of our beginning publishers (and some of the ones who’ve been around for a while) make sure they don’t commit the more … [Read more...]

You have re-read and proof-read, you've made corrections hundreds of times, and you feel that you're all ready to go. Or you are only just beginning - and your project needs a … [Read more...]

Ebooks, Graphic Design, and What’s Ahead

2-1

1. What happens in print stays in print. You spent lots of time with us making sure your chapter header was that fancy font, and your text looked this way and that . You were real specific about paragraph indents and spacing too. Maybe we suggested some fancy scene dividers. Now its time to give all that up. Your ebook will look whack! If you feel … [Read more...]
