Hi Ron,
Thanks, for clearly distinguishing between vanity publishing and self-publishing. I have also heard the term, print-on-demand publishing. Most people equate self-publishing with vanity publishing. This article clearly helps in drawing the line.

[...]I read quite a few newsletters on self-publishing and one of my favorites is Ron Pramschufer's Publishing Basics. He has written an article in this months edition entitled Self-Publishing and the New Millennium plus 10. Though it is another great article from Pramschufer, I would tend to disagree with this particular view of why people publish.[...]

But I'm of the understanding that with PublishAmerica, the author does not pay to have the book published.

Leslie,
You should do a Google search using "complaints Publish America".

If you use self publishing.com how does your book get offered by Amazon, Barnes and Nobles, all the big names.

SelfPublishing.com is like the "Home Depot" for the self publisher. The Thor program gets your book listed in all the major databases and makes your book available on a POD basis. In addition, you can find a distributor or you can do something in between (Thor plus a wholesaler like Baker & Taylor). It's your call.

Agree with your latest 'self-Pub' & marketing scams but you need to touch
upon the real bottleneck/stranglehold on success -Distribution.
Local has been fine but the big boys have national all stitched up.
-At least UK-wise.
We just have to face the fact that self-Pub is classed as the 'illegitimate child'
of the publishing 'trade' world -and that ain't gonna change anytime soon.

Find a distribution solution leveler-like an internet equivalent, in the real world
& then we can play on an equal level field with the big boys.
Then we'd see the impact on sales volume = ££$$ + a whole new & more meaningful 'Best Sellers' lists.

The answer? - a reasonable 'cut' - % wise for a middleman who produces nothing and is little more than a frieght handler.
That means more like 30% instead of 60%+ (Amazon Et-Al) so that margins
remain viable for a small scale producer on a higher unit cost.

Dream a little Dream..........................................................

Hi Ron,

I was very puzzled by your article as I searched long and hard for the route to go for getting my book in print. I wound up with a company that I don't think fits into any of your categories. It is similar to the ones you call "vanity presses" but assures us that we own everything. That was important and I believe them. Could there be another category?

There are some variations of the vanity theme but, basically, you are either the publisher, or not. If you are not the publisher, you look at the way the money flows. If the money flows in your direction, that's good. If the money flows from you to the publisher, you're in a vanity situation. I variation of that is a place like Publish America (do a Google search "Complaints Publish America").
