Every publishing seminar I give starts with the same line, “Writing is a love, and Publishing is a business”. The “business” of publishing is to sell books. Yet, that simple fact is rarely recognized. There are dozens of so called literary awards available to the independent publisher, who are willing to pay an entry fee to join the lottery.. But as far as I know, there is no award which recognizes sales success until now. Introducing the Glengarry Book Sales Award.

Let’s Step Back and Get Some Perspective. Whose perspective shall we get? As readers we naturally get the perspective the writer has given us at any given moment within the text. When I read, I hope the writer has given some deliberate thought to the lens through which I receive the story or information. As an editor, I find that writers often have not thoroughly thought through perspective or point-of-view issues within their manuscripts.

Reflecting on Bogus Blurbs, Unreal Reviews, and Manufactured Best-sellers. Got an email recently from a college fraternity brother of mine that read, in part: I have a small favor to ask, A good friend of mine, ____, has written a book, and Amazon is currently running a contest to determine the winner in this category. It would really help him out if you could go over to Amazon and write a good review of the book (here’s the link: ____). The more good reviews he gets, the better his chances of winning. I know he’d really appreciate it.
