After finishing and self-proofreading a book, I had a semi-professional proof reader take a stab at it. She found a boxcar load of errors. An unknown number of readers at the corporate office read the book during fact checking and found numerous errors. Two friends read the book and found more errors. Before sending the book to the printer, I decided to have a professional editor take a look. This individual found at least two dozen more errors. Even after all this, readers found three additional errors, including a huge mistake that made me cringe.

You can't edit your own work. And no matter how many other people read it and find stuff, a good editor will pull your patootie out of the barbecue.

Thanks for this no holds barred advice. I am interested in applying for your unpublished memoir contest. I have a Holocaust related father-daughter manuscript: NO GOODBYES I am looking to self-publish and entering into the copyediting phase, considering which editor to work with. Please tell me more about the contest, and if you have copyeditors to recommend in this genre of memoir.
Much obliged,
Naava
