Mr. Marsh, its unfortunate that you say Ms. Reiss is in error, though the stats may have changed a bit, overall this is still the information that the SBA will advise a prospective business owner should they walk into their office for advice. I think the main point to this article is to point out the issues that stand before the new and eager entrepreneur in order to help them understand the seriousness of the start up side of business. She explains 5 major points which are very valid in the decision making process that can lead to immediate faliure unless appropriately handled. Even for the seasoned business owner, these 5 points in particular need to be re-evaluted, re-adjusted and appropriately handled EACH AND EVERY DAY. I think this is the focus we should have when reading this article.

In her article "Why Small Businesses Fail" Fern Reiss says that over half of small businesses fail within three years of starting. That is an old myth that should not be perpertuated. According to the U.S Small Business Administration 50% of new businesses are still surviving after four years; and of those closed, 33% were successful but closed for reasons other than business failure. Only 17% actually failed within the four year period. Please advise Ms. Reiss that she is in error.
